Preventing and Managing Skin Complications in the Acute Care Setting: Insights, Experiences and Recommendations from Wound Care Experts

Moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) defines a spectrum of injuries characterized by the inflammation and denudation of the epidermis resulting from prolonged exposure to various moisture sources. Join this series to explore clinical skin and wound challenges in the differential diagnosis of MASD. We correlate the incidence of MASD to a patient’s risk for wound development, examine the use of advanced skin protectants for prevention, and discuss the data, paradigm shifts and implications of recent coding classification updates impacting the care of patients.

About the Speakers

Kara S. Couch, MS, CRNP, CWCN-AP, FAAWC
Director, Wound Care Services, The George Washington University Hospital, Washington D.C.

Ms. Couch graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing (FNP) from Georgetown University in 2002. Currently, she works as the Director of Wound Care Services at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC. She is an Associate Research Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University. Her wound care interests include caring for persons with limb loss/limb differences, complex abdominal wounds and use of technology in wound healing.

Ms. Couch is the current Co-Chair of the Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders and the President-Elect of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC). Kara is a Fellow of the Association of the Advancement of Wound Care. She is an editorial board member of Wound Management and Prevention, Today’s Wound Clinic, Wound Masterclass and WoundSource 2022. Kara is the co-chair of the Wound Care Community for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She is a member of the Prophylactic Dressing Standards Initiative, a joint collaboration between the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel.

Cathy is an Advanced Practice WOC Nurse providing care to patients across the continuum in acute care, long-term care, home health and outpatient settings. Employed by Connecticut Clinical Nursing Associates, she also provides consulting to organizations wishing to improve wound outcomes, conducts clinical research, lectures nationally and internationally, is the Co-Editor of the text Wound, Ostomy, Continence Secrets and provides clinical support to Wound Reference.com. A previous Nurse Board Member of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care, Cathy currently serves on the educational planning committee. Additionally, she serves as an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the Yale School of Nursing.
