Homeowners want more from the construction industry

3M conducted a survey of homeowners who had engaged in recent home renovations to learn whether they considered the environment in their home renovation projects during the pandemic.

  • 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules

Did you know that the average roof using shingles with 3M smog-reducing granules today have the capacity to reduce smog similar to 2-3 trees? We like to imagine a world where all communities are safe, healthy and thriving—where increased energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and access to clean air and water enhance human health at home and at work. Still, nearly four in ten Americans currently live in counties with unhealthy levels of ground level ozone or particle pollution.

Reducing air pollution remains critical to public health, and 3M is addressing this environmental challenge by creatively applying science to help reduce smog and help improve the air we breathe. Learn more about our Smog Reducing Granules.

  • Many people uncovered a silver lining to being at home more due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling projects at an unexpected rate and reversing industry analyst projections of decline into growth.

  • When asked what would make selecting an eco-friendly construction product easier in the future, homeowners highlighted equal pricing, being easily and readily available, and having a direct comparison of features and benefits between eco-friendly options and alternatives.

  • Homeowners believe most in the act of recycling and reducing waste as the top activity that will positively impact the environment. Homeowners expect the industry to prioritize the below activities to help create a sustainable future.

  • About the 2021 Home Renovation Study

3M conducted a survey with 1,585 homeowners. The results shared are statistically significant (i.e., the results were likely not due to chance). Survey respondents had joint or full responsibility for home decisions, started or completed a home renovation project between May 2020 and April 2021, and the demographics reflect the general population of homeowners over the age of 18.
