Webinar Synopsis

Dr Ling Moi Lin

The hub of the catheter is a potential portal of entry for infection. Closed catheter access system is preferred to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) to open systems. Catheter hubs, needleless connectors, and injection ports are to be disinfected before accessing. However, compliance may vary putting the patient at risk of infection. In the recent SHEA/IDSA/APIC Practice 2022 Recommendation: Strategies to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections in acute-care hospitals, the use of an antiseptic-containing hub/connector cap/port protector to cover the connector is an additional approach that can be adopted to further reduce CLABSI.

Eliza Searcy

This presentation describes clinical challenges associated with catheter maintenance that can impact the bloodstream infection (BSI) risk. With a focus on the intraluminal route of contamination, challenges with IV access point disinfection as well as the role technology can play to support positive patient outcomes will be examined. Supporting clinical evidence is presented along with the 2024 Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice recommendation for the care and maintenance of IV access points.
